Understanding basic MileIQ terminology is pivotal to improving your use of the mighty mileage tracking application. This primer will walk you through the essential terms in easy-to-understand language. If these seem too easy for you, let us know in the comments what else you’d like to learn about MileIQ.
One of the most attractive features of MileIQ is that there is no on/off switch or buttons to press. Once installed, MileIQ works in the background. The app is smart; it recognizes when you’re driving and knows when to start and stop tracking your mileage. Your miles are automatically logged and recorded, creating a complete record of all your mileage for taxes or reimbursements.
Your business drives are the rides you take in your vehicle for business purposes. Business drives include trips to meet clients, pick up supplies and other business-related travel. When using MileIQ, swiping right classifies the drive as business. Swiping left, as personal. Importantly, based on the latest tax laws, you cannot deduct your commute. We’ve put together a list of what the IRS considers business drives.
The MileIQ dashboard is great for working on your laptop, desktop or tablet. From the dashboard, you can see all your miles, edit drive details and create expense reports. You can also use advanced features like bulk classify and adding locations.
This feature saves time by recognizing that a drive has been classified the same way multiple times. Learn more about Frequent Drives.
MileIQ free, limited
This is the free version of the app, offering 40 free drives every month. Sometimes this is referred to as the “Basic” edition.
This is the paid version of the app, offering unlimited drives every month. Previously, this was called “Premium”, but is now simply called “Unlimited”. This is a subscription that automatically renews monthly or annually, depending on what you choose.
Your personal drives are the rides you take in your vehicle that are not for business purposes. Read the IRS mileage guidelines for tax-specific information around determining what’s a business or personal drive.
MileIQ maintains an accurate record of your mileage stored securely in the cloud. Use one-tap on your mobile device to get a recent month or year-long mileage report with easy-to-read drive details. For more detailed reporting, you can use your dashboard to view all your drives and create custom reports.
Teams is a version of MileIQ that supports companies whose employees drive for work. This version includes a volume discount, single billing, premium support and personalized training. Read how a teams account helps keep the tax auditors at a safe distance.
Previously referred to as “Work Shifts”, this feature lets you set working hours so drives outside of those times get automatically classified as personal. This allows you to take a closer look at drives during business hours and add in-depth details as needed. Read more about Work Hours.
