There are several important security steps that you can take to better secure your MileIQ account and the data you keep in it:
Use a different password on MileIQ than any other site you log into. That way, if someone learns your password on another site, you won’t have to worry about them also being able to access your MileIQ account.
Avoid using simple passwords that could be looked up in a dictionary. Instead, choose a complex password that is at least 8 characters long and contains a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Equally good is picking a phrase that is at least 20 characters long.
A password manager can make both of these easy to do. We suggest using one.
Hackers might try to lure you to log into a site that looks like MileIQ, but isn’t really MileIQ. We call this password-stealing attack “phishing.” Treat every message that asks you to sign in, confirm your password, or open an unexpected attachment with caution. Before entering your MileIQ username and password into any site, be sure to verify that the address in your browser is the official MileIQ website.
Check the sender of the email or message. If the address is not one you recognize, or the message creates a sense of urgency, asks for personal information, or contains a link that doesn’t match the site it claims to be from, don’t click it. When in doubt, open the MileIQ app or type the website address yourself rather than following a link.
Software updates often include fixes for security issues, so it’s important to keep your apps and your device up to date. When your phone, tablet, or computer alerts you that an update is available, install it right away.
Be cautious of updates that appear in a web browser, as many of these are fake and will try to trick you into installing malware. Install updates from your device’s official app store or system settings.
If someone steals a device you have MileIQ installed on, they may be able to access your MileIQ data as easily as your email, photos, and other applications on that device. To protect yourself, use the security controls available in your device’s operating system. These include setting a screen lock or passcode, enabling an auto-lock timeout, and turning on biometric authentication such as a fingerprint or face unlock. Where your device offers it, also turn on storage encryption.
From time to time you may need to share your drive data or a report with a third party, such as an employer, an accountant, or a client. Before you share, take a moment to confirm exactly what you are sending and who will receive it. Share only the information that is needed, double-check the recipient, and use a trusted method to send it.
If you sign in to your account on a computer or device that other people can use, be sure to log out when you’re finished. Avoid saving your password in the browser on a shared device, and don’t leave your account open where someone else could use it.
If you notice something that doesn’t seem right — activity you don’t recognize, a message you weren’t expecting, or any other sign that your account may have been accessed by someone else — don’t wait. Contact MileIQ support right away so the team can help you look into it.
